  • stereo installation by Halfrauds - anyone used them?

I'm thinking about changing my headunit to a DAB unit so I can listen to 6Music on the move. Swapping the headunit itself is a piece of cake, done several over the years, but installing the DAB aerial might be a pain in the coaxial, so I'm thinking of getting Halfrauds to install one for me. Anyone ever used them for this?

Not sure if I'd trust them to change a bulb really.

What sort of aerial does it come with? It may work ok with the standard one.

Haven't looked that deeply in to it, but I doubt it would work with the standard one, I know my DAB stereo at home needed a proper DAB aerial to stand any chance of picking up transmissions.

Same as Tel would definitely not let them have a go. Worth looking into it a little more and finding someone that specialises in the dab Ariel

Hi Rob. Could try these guys.. they fitted my alarm a few years back. They are pretty good and they're mobile too. Email/ring Simon there's not much he doesn't know about car stereos.

The ribbon aerials that mount on the screen are shockingly bad for reception...pop in to Halfords and pick up a sonichi 14.99 magnetic roof mount, it comes with five meters of lead. They are powerfull enough to get a signal even when laying down on the rear parcel shelf and they are small.

Thanks guys. I'd been looking at a Sonichi S100 DAB adaptor - plus the aerial you mentioned Dave - as they're cheaper than a headunit and work with the existing install, using an empty FM station.

I've got a nearly new fiesta for work, and after a day trip to the other side of London in it today, I'm not sure if DAB is a good thing for cars. Did my head in with dropping out or switching back to FM all the time, and that's a Ford factory fit!

DAB coverage is still a little patchy, but it will improve, especially once they switch off the FM signal. I've emailed Phil's guys, so am waiting to hear back from them.

Hi rob Ive had a DAB head unit in my current Scoob and my previous bugeye for ages and as someone said above the main thing is your aerial set up, in my bugeye Scoob it had the standard whip areial so I got an aerial spilitter off eBay which worked well, but when I got my blob eye its aerial is built in somewhere so I bought a kenwood stick on windscreen one which was rubbish, I then bought and fitted a bee sting type aerial too the roof which is great. I think you'll find DAB coverage great if listening to BBC or D1 networks only areas I've found to be patchie are around the Suffolk coast Aldburgh, Saxmundham and some of north Norfolk.

thanks for the advice everyone. Finally heard back from Phil's guy at Dave Wallis, got a new Kenwood head unit with DAB, Bluetooth phone connectivity etc being installed the first week in June, for what I think is a reasonable price of 230.
