I've been running at 300-ish bhp for about 18 months, and about 20,000 miles now, and without wishing to tempt fate, have suffered no problems whatsoever. I was sitting at about 250-260 for about 2 years before that, again, aside from some worn turbo seals on the original TD04, have had no issues. That said, I don't run it on full boost (was 1.1 bar, now 1.4 bar) all the time, and don't cane it all day, every day. My car is a 1997 model, with over 95k on the clock, has always been regularly serviced and looked after.
Two reputable tuners (Andy Forrest and Pavlo at Zen Performance) carried out the work including the mapping, and I'm sure they've done so with useability and safety in mind.

And in my opinion you would be better of getting a Jap Import as they have a lot more power in base form and give a better base for modding b
Yes sounds a good point i will try some insurance quotes again as the imports were so high compared to the uk spec one

definitely better to start with an import STI, as Marty said, a far better base to build on, and more likely to withstand that power for longer.

Get the Sti if you can. Better for tuning as half the stuff you need is already in there, and nice shorter ratio gear box.
If you get the UK spec then 320BHP is your max, however both UK snd STI gear boxes will give up from what iv heard at around 300 + of torque. Take in to account how the car your buying has been looked after aswell, and try to find out what work has been done on the car to hit that kind of power. Speak to a good tuner as mentioned above like Pavlo or Andy Forrest for example, depending where you can get to, and they`ll get the best out of your car safely.

i have a turbo 2000 and mines proven 355bhp with 360 lbs ft. and thats still using standard box apart from exedy clutch. car is boosting 1.6 bar and holding 1.4. but because i didnt upgrade the internals.the engine let go in big fashion. having a play with a m3 which i was all over. dropd it down at the wrong time and there we go a big bang and pop, loadsa smoke...um that gave me a nice 4grand bill. so ur answer is the more u spend the more power and the safer it will be. my scoob is now touching the 15grand mark in last 6 months.

Safe is defined by what mods have been done and by whom, who has mapped it etc
It should be okay at 300 if done properly as Rob has experienced. or.... it could go bang at less if done the wrong way.
Any time you modify the car, it is eating up more of the safety margin of components and on an older car, there is normal wear and tear to account for in there too.
